Are You A Senior With Cosmetic Dental Problems? Know Your Options

Posted on: 11 October 2018

As a senior, you may think that you are not eligible for many dental procedures at your old age. Thankfully, there are plenty of options available to you so you can have teeth that look great and are fully functional. Here are a few cosmetic problems you may currently have, and the treatments that are available to you in order to fix them.

Teeth That Are Missing

If you're currently missing some of your teeth, know that there are a few options to fix them. The method that will give you the best results will be implants. You may think that the elderly are ineligible for this procedure, but that is not the case. In fact, the opposite is true, where young people are ineligible if their jaw has not fully developed yet. As long as your jawbone is still in good health, an implant can be used to replace a missing tooth, which gives it the strength and stability it needs for chewing.

Another option is to use a dental bridge, which will fill in the gap by suspending a fake tooth between two healthy teeth. This also requires that you have healthy teeth that can support the bridge since the bridge will fail if one of the supporting teeth fail.

You can also use partial dentures, which can be used to fill in a single tooth if necessary. You don't need to have a full row of missing teeth to use dentures to fix dental problems.

Teeth That Are Chipped

Teeth that are chipped can be fixed in several ways. One affordable method is to use dental bonding, where your dentist will reshape the tooth with bonding material so it looks whole once again. Of course, the bonding material can deteriorate over time, which will require that you fix the tooth to protect exposed surfaces.

Another option is to cover the front surface with a dental veneer, which is a thin shell that is attached to the tooth, giving it the appearance that it is not damaged. This may be appealing if you have several chipped teeth and want to fix them all at once.

Teeth That Are Misaligned

While metal braces may not be ideal for alignment issues, you can still use plastic aligning trays to fix problems in your old age. You would wear these trays during the day and at night, taking them out for brushing and eating.
