2 Tips To Avoid Dislodging Particles After A Socket Bone Grafting

Posted on: 7 October 2016

If you want to undergo a dental implant procedure, then you may have to go complete a socket bone grafting. This involves placing bone in areas of your mouth where the bone development is weak. Weaker bone development is more common in individuals who have had damaged or missing teeth. In addition, if you are a denture wearer, then you may have experienced bone loss. After this surgical procedure is complete, you may notice small particles in your mouth every few days. These particles are coming from the surgical site. While a small amount of dislodging is not a cause for concern, larger amounts can disrupt your recovery process. Therefore, it is important to avoid dislodging particles after a socket bone grafting. Luckily, there are a few tips that you can use to do this.

Do not Use Your Tongue to Touch the Surgical Site

It is expected that after the procedure is complete, you may use your tongue to kind of feel around your mouth. This is a lot more common if you cannot see the surgical site. However, applying pressure to the surgical site can end up moving the material. The bone has not had a chance to heal yet. As a result, you may notice particles and granules are dislodged from the surgical site each time that it is touched. If you really would like to feel your surgical site, then this should be done a few days after the procedure is completed and you should try to apply as little pressure as possible.

Avoid Spitting Immediately After the Procedure

Drinking or brushing your teeth immediately after a socket bone grafting can be almost impossible to do. These activities should be performed as gently as possible since the force can end up dislodging particles from your surgical area. When brushing your teeth, you should use your head instead of your cheeks to move water around your mouth. This will keep the grafting material from moving out of place. In addition, when drinking after the procedure it is recommended to avoid using a straw as the suction can end up pulling particles out of your surgical site and interfere with the healing process. Instead, take small sips of your beverage before swallowing.

Dealing with a small amount of dislodging after a socket bone grafting can be a bit uncomfortable. However, if you use these tips you should be able to minimize this discomfort as much as possible. Talk to your dentist if you have any questions or concerns.
